“I am a medical student specializing in gynecology. Upon the implementation of sanctions, in addition to the shortage of anesthetics is Operation Rooms, there is no access to Misoprostol which is the drug used to stop post child birth or post abortion bleeding. Many patients do not have the ability to pay 2,000,000 IRRs for each pill in the black market, so in addition to the fact that many patients will suffer from severe bleeding after giving birth, due to the lack of drugs we are forced to conduct abortion surgeries for many patients in the early months of pregnancy, which has significant impact on their future chances of pregnancy.”
“I work in a pharmaceuticals-import company specializing in drugs for Rheumatic patients, skin cancer, and liver and kidney transplant patients. The phone calls that we receive directly from patients are each a painful story.. a six month old baby diagnosed with rheumatoid, a woman who has just given birth with rheumatoid, those who even under insurance coverage will have to pay costs nearing 300 million IRR for kidney and liver transplants, and must be using our drugs upon surgery, and can’t find the drugs… and more interesting is that all these drugs are currently being illegally imported through Turkey, without complying by “Cold Chain Regulations” (standards for the preservation and transfer of pharmaceuticals) and other health regulations, and even these too are rare. In some cases there have been reports of fatality in patients due to the prescription of alternative drugs by doctors, which have not met the same qualitative standards as the foreign-imported drugs and were followed by the patient’s death. The numbers of the stories are as much as the number of all patients.”
“My mother is sick. She has M.S. and the sanctions have caused many drugs to become rare or impossible to find, in addition to their becoming expensive. M.S. is all about panic attacks and stress. In Iran in these conditions we already have enough stress and turmoil and now with the lack of drugs it’s much worse and more difficult and more intolerable than ever.”
“I have an illness called Fibromyalgia. It’s something close to Rheumatology with severe insomnia. When I don’t take the LYRICA pills –because I can’t find any- my entire life is disrupted. I become depressed, sleep during the days, can’t go to work, therefore I don’t have an income, which intensifies my depression. I can’t do anything, I don’t have a life, and turn into a parasite. Actually it’s not only me, it’s all Fibromyalgia patients. So I try to force myself to live in any way possible without these pills. In the past three weeks I haven’t even slept for 10 hours, while suffering hopelessly from back pain and neck pain. I only wish to die, a few times a day. I believe hell is this very life that I live.”
“I have a heart condition and must use a specific drug. But the sanctions are not allowing the import of this drug to Iran.. I am nearing death step by step.. but I have not yet reached 25…”
“My grandmother has spinal canal stenosis. She must take a pill three times a week. The pill was already expensive before the sanctions but now we can’t even find one pack of this drug. If she doesn’t take this drug she is practically paralyzed and for her the loss of movement is death…”
“Hi. My friend Mehdi was arrested on charges of acting against national security, while helping the earthquake stricken people of the Azerbaijan province. He was tortured in detention to the point that they almost needed to mutilate his limbs due to the infection of his toe nails which were broken with pliers. Mehdi went into a coma and they were forced to transfer him to a hospital, but even there his situation was no better because due to sanctions there is no medicine in the market. Mehdi is still suffering from pain for helping earthquake stricken people and for wanting to free Iran from the hands of the oppressor… and for the crime of… for what crime???”
“My aunt is 35 years old and has Scleroderma, it’s a kind of a blood disease and she must use foreign-made drugs which are now impossible to find due to sanctions. This has caused her arm to produce calcium and her joints are destroyed and last week she was forced to have surgery on her arm. If the sanctions continue the same thing will occur to her other arm too, but because of her specific condition she can’t take anesthetics and surgery is a big risk for her…”
“My sister has a severe respiratory allergies and has to use a specific spray as well as a flu shot which she has to take in the beginning of the cold season each year. But this year in this situation she has not been able to find her drugs.”
“My husband works in a high ranking government bureau. His insurance and contract have been discontinued without any explanation and it has been nine months that he has no insurance or salary! But because he has no other options he must work there without a salary until someone remembers that there are about 60 people that have been kept in suspense and without salary in the name of ‘changing conditions’! I myself am a journalist and am forced to work without insurance because our employers don’t believe we have the right to insurance! It’s probably waited money for them! The reason I said all this: Not having insurance means when your tooth aches you must calm it with Lidocaine because the costs of the dentist are very high. Actually only the doctor’s visit and x-rays are covered by insurance, and not the rest of the costs, but even that is important when you’re poor. So after some months I went to the dentist from severe pain. He fixed one and gave an appointment for the other. He said I need a complete x-ray of the jaw, and I calculated that if I pay for the x-ray, then I will have no money for the repair. So I stopped going. Eight months have passed and I sleep in pain every night and there’s no news from insurance. They told me the University of Tehran’s clinic is cheap. I went there and realized that a filling and a root canal costs 2,000,000 IRR, eight months ago it was 65,000,000 IRR which I couldn’t afford to pay! In eight months this price difference is due to sanctions! For now I’m watching my teeth fall out and get ruined at the age of 28, I can’t even eat, and I sleep with Lidocaine at nights! I don’t know if it was relevant or not, but for me this suffering is related to the sanctions.”
