Havaar: Iranian Initiative Against War, Sanctions and State Repression

We are a grassroots group of Iranians, Iranian-Americans and allies who have joined together to categorically oppose any military action and the U.S.-led sanctions against Iran. We stand in solidarity with the Iranian people’s struggle against war and sanctions and against state repression; we know that all of these forms of violence hurt the lives and aspirations of ordinary Iranians.

We stand in opposition to any form of war against Iran. We believe that with recent, unprecedented sanctions, war has already started. The United States has imposed crippling economic sanctions against Iran and maintains threats of a military attack. We firmly believe that de-escalating an arms race in the Middle East should begin with nuclear disarmament for all nations in the region and with good faith efforts towards nuclear disarmament globally.

International sanctions and U.S. and Israeli threats of war have served the interests of the most right-wing forces in the Iranian government. These forms of outside aggression help these forces in the Iranian government shift the focus of public discourse away from democratic and economic struggles and place the blame for internal problems solely on foreign intervention. Not only do right-wing forces in the Iranian government use sanctions and the threat of war as a rallying cry, but war also provides a pretext for further repression.

Furthermore, the sanctions against Iran are broad, indiscriminate and highly unethical. They are designed to place pressure on the Iranian economy, targeting the energy industry, imports and exports and the country’s financial system.  History has shown us that such sanctions have the greatest impact on the most vulnerable members of society. Very recently, over a decade of sanctions on Iraq proved disastrous for the Iraqi people, causing tens of thousands of deaths and great economic hardship, with a disproportionate impact on workers, women and the poor.

We believe the Iranian people have the sole right to determine their government and we oppose all forms of foreign state intervention, including those carried out in the name of democracy or human rights.

At the same time, we stand in solidarity with the century-long struggle of Iranians for meaningful democracy, freedom, and justice, the most recent manifestation of which unfolded in the aftermath of the severely irregular 2009 presidential elections. Millions of Iranians marched through the streets demanding their rights. Since then, the world has witnessed increased crackdowns on people in Iran. Labor, student and women’s rights activists, journalists and political dissidents have been brutally suppressed, imprisoned and tortured, and the arbitrary targeting of religious, ethnic and sexual minorities has increased.

The repression of these individuals, many of whom have bravely participated in grassroots opposition, should not be used as a justification for war and sanctions. This very opposition has stated—unequivocally—that they oppose military intervention against Iran.

We cannot stand back and allow bankrupt policies and politicians to drive the political agenda. Our struggle against war, sanctions and repression is part of a global struggle for social justice—in Iran, in the United States, throughout the Middle East and everywhere.

We oppose U.S.-led sanctions and threats of war against Iran. We aim to work in solidarity with the Iranian people and refuse to remain silent while they have their rights systematically abused by their government.

We call on others to join our efforts to prevent a disastrous war, lift the heavy burden of sanctions from the backs of ordinary Iranians, and stand in solidarity with the Iranian people as they struggle against domestic repression and foreign intervention. Now is the time to join in the chorus of voices in Iran, the United States, and throughout the world calling for a new day of justice and hope.
